Métis youth come Back to Batoche Days

Gates open for the 2012 Back to Batoche Days Festival on Thursday and it is dedicated to Métis youth.

The 42nd annual festival is back for four days and Métis residents are invited to share their culture, language, music and art until celebrations conclude on Sunday.

“We are thrilled to announce that this year’s Festival will incorporate many faucets of the Youth movement of the Métis across the country,” says Co-Chair Robert Doucette.

In addition to the lineup of youth performers, the Île-à-la-Crosse Community Cadet Corps will be onsite for the festival.  They are the only Cadet Corp that incorporates traditional Métis Sash and culture into their regalia and lessons.

“The program engages young people in learning about leadership, personal responsibility, teamwork and fun.” says group founder Angella McKay.

Visitors can participate or just take in the jigging competition, fiddling, square dancing, evening entertainment, old time dance, workshops, chuckwagon and chariot races, a slow pitch tournament and voyageur games.

A new addition to the festival, Fiddle Mania takes place on Saturday at 8:45 p.m. where every fiddler on site is invited to participate in an onstage performance with accomplished violinist Alex Lamoureux.

Enjoy traditional Métis cuisine prepared by renowned chef Wade St Germain.

Opening ceremonies are scheduled to take place on Friday.
