A message in a bottle with a personal note written by a young boy to a friend who died was found on a Florida beach earlier this month.

They’re the words of a mourning friend:

“Dear Daniel, I’m really sorry that you passed away and if you were alive and you would be playing football, soccer and basketball and be playing with Matthew and Oscar and Brandon. I am in the fifth grade and you were my best friend and our favourite song was Austin Moon and I hope you [have] fun with Jesus. From your best friend: Jonothan Torres”

Steve Mershon, a 54-year-old electrician, found the bottle when he was taking photos of a sunset. He picked up the bottle to use as foreground prop when he noticed the note inside.

“I was heartbroken for the little guy,” Mershon told Global News. “Good kid, this Jonothan. He poured his little heart out.”

Mershon posted his find on Facebook and wrote that Jonothan’s note was “the most beautiful thing I have ever found.”

He added that he believes a higher power led him to the bottle because he is travelling to Mexico on a cruise next month: the perfect opportunity to return the bottle to the open sea.

“I’ll tell my story on [the message] and hopefully someone will share what I’ve shared and feel what I’ve felt,” said Mershon.

If he had the chance to meet Daniel, Mershon said he would “shake his hand, high five, fist bump and tell him what an awesome kid he is.”
