CALGARY – Olympic medalists Cassie Campbell-Pascall and Kelly Bechard were on hand at the South Health Campus YMCA on Monday for the unveiling of a new outdoor spots pad.

The special floor can be used for everything from floor hockey and soccer to basketball, volleyball and badminton.

“The sport pad will allow young program participants to stay active, develop physical literacy and learn the essential life skill of teamwork,” YMCA Calgary President and CEO Helene Weir said in a news release.

Every day we see the benefits of giving young people access to facilities that allow them to exercise, participate in sports and have fun,” South Health Campus Senior Operating Officer Lori Anderson said. “This is a major contributor in maintaining wellness both physically and emotionally.”

Scotiabank, which donated $180,000 to the creation of the sports pad, has pledged to donate an additional $5 towards the YMCA Calgary (up to $70,000) for every share, favourite or retweet of a video it created for the project.

“This donation will go to the Scotiabank Youth Leadership and Recreation Fund, which the YMCA will use to expand and develop child and youth programming, fund program participation through YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign, and help build a healthy youth culture and positive generation of leaders,” a spokesperson wrote in an email to Global News.
