EDMONTON – A wind warning that was put in place for Edmonton Friday night was dropped by Environment Canada Saturday morning.
Shortly after 10:30 a.m., the wind warning for Edmonton and areas to the northwest of the city was dropped. However, it remained in place for several regions southeast of Edmonton.
By 3:15 p.m. Saturday all wind warnings issued for Alberta had been dropped.
Wind gusts of 80 kilometres an hour or more were recorded at both the Edmonton Blatchford weather station and the Edmonton International Airport late Friday.
Global Edmonton viewers reported blowing debris on area highways and damaged light poles on the south end of Edmonton.
The City of Edmonton warned transit users Friday night that LRT services would be disrupted as a result of the intense wind.
The wind warning issued by Environment Canada cautioned that windows and roof shingles could be damaged and that drivers should be aware of the possibility of changing road conditions because of the high winds.
According to Environment Canada, a fast-moving weather system crossed over northern Alberta. There was the potential for northwest winds of 60 to 90 km/h to develop over the central and eastern part of the province overnight.
