A Siksika man injured while being arrested by the RCMP in his own home last week plans to file a complaint with the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission for the RCMP.

Christian Duckchief suffered several broken bones to his facial area, including one fracture that required surgery.

He and his fiancé, Chantel Stonechild, were in their home on the Siksika First Nation when RCMP officers entered their bedroom at about 6 a.m. on April 1.

Duckchief’s lawyer says his client fought back at first, not knowing who was in his house.

“He was unsure as to who they were initially — he was afraid for himself and for his four children and began resisting back,” said Dale Fedorchuk, Duckchief’s lawyer.

Stonechild said her fiancé stopped resisting, but the blows continued.

“That cop started elbowing him in the face … he had Christian on the ground and Christian’s face was like this and he was using his elbow … on Christian’s face,” said Stonechild.

RCMP say they won’t comment on the incident since an investigation is ongoing and the matter is before the courts.

Duckchief is charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and breaching conditions.

He was released on bail after appearing in Drumheller Provincial Court on Wednesday.

It’s expected a trial date will be set next month.
