EDMONTON – The top young scientists in Alberta faced off in Edmonton on Saturday.
Fifteen students presented their research at the regional edition of the Sanofi Biogenius Canada.
The teenagers partnered with researchers three months ago to begin their work, looking into things like exploring cures for cancer and treatment options for Alzheimer’s disease.
“I’ve learned a lot about how to conduct research in a lab,” grade 11 student Lulu Wang said. “I’ve learned a lot of lab techniques that I wouldn’t have otherwise known, and I’ve also met some pretty great mentors along the way, and just how to interact in a professional and medical environment.”

The competition allows the students to push their minds to the limit, with access to tools that wouldn’t normally be available to students until grad school.
“Students that come out of this competition typically move on into fields of science,” Sava Knezic, Sanofi Biogenius Canada regional coordinator, said.
“This research that they’re doing in high school they also continue to do in university and into grad studies, and it becomes a research area that they continue to focus on for their entire lives.”
The students are competing to represent Alberta at the SBC national final in Ottawa next month.
