Drivers in Toronto can expect to pay stiffer fines for certain types of illegal parking beginning on Thursday.
Motorists who block lanes, double park, stand in TTC zones and block high-occupancy lanes will be subject to fines of $150.
“By attaching a real price to blocking lanes of traffic with illegal parking, we will reduce congestion,” said Mayor John Tory in a media release.
The increase in fines is part of Tory’s plan of cutting congestion in the city.
“This is just one more step that we are taking to keep Toronto moving and keep pedestrians safe,” he said.
It is estimated congestion costs commuters as much as $3.3 billion annually for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area.
The city says it costs an additional $2.7 million due to lost economic activity and accompanying job loss.
