Calm waters beckoned a group of six paddleboarders who are spending 24 consecutive hours on False Creek to raise money for families battling cancer.

They are taking part in the Monster & Sea 24 Hour Paddle, a fundraiser happening at seven sites across North America over the Easter weekend.

The team wants to stuff envelopes with $1,000 each and distribute them to families dealing with cancer.

“The families came to us as we advertised through social media what we were doing,” team captain Scott Burton said. “So [funds] go directly to the families…They go to families for groceries, for gas, for utilities, for their family unit.”

For many team members, their motivation is personal.

“My mom is a breast cancer survivor,” Shannon Bell said. “I’m paddling because of her and also because of so many people who have been affected by this disease.”

The group will take shifts over the next 24 hours, making their way around False Creek and accepting donations.

So far the weather has cooperated, but they’re not worried if conditions take a turn for the worse.

“Compared to what the people we’re raising the money for are going through, a little bit of rain is nothing,” team member Estelle Matheson said.

Those interested in donating can visit the Vancouver Monster & Sea 24 Hour Paddle gofundme page.
