Patrons at the bar doused the blaze with a fire extinguisher and discovered the victim lying unconscious on the ground.

Jean-Pierre Brabant with Montreal Police told Global News that it appears the woman, who was allegedly under the influence, went to the bathroom and lit a cigarette and most likely fell asleep.

The burning cigarette then caused a fire in the bathroom.

The woman, aged 55, was taken to hospital and later pronounced dead.

The investigation continues.
