“Because it’s Pi Day we decided to open,” manager Eugene Fedorkiw said. “We had so many calls last week for orders for pies.”

Pi — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, represented as the Greek letter π — is very special. Each year on March 14 (3/14) mathematical nerds everywhere celebrate Pi Day.

“I think it is great,” Fedorkiw said. “People are interested in mathematics.

“Everybody wants to be a math nerd. And if you’re not, this is your chance to eat some pie and enjoy Pi Day.”

On an average weekday, Vi’s For Pies will make about a dozen pies. On Pi Day though, add up to 60 orders on top of that. The Pi pie popularity started with one simple request several years ago.

“We got a phone call here and we didn’t know what they were talking about,” Fedorkiw admitted. “In the past five years, it’s grown every year, bigger and bigger. More and more people coming for Pi Day.”

The most popular Pi orders? The cream pies – banana, coconut, chocolate almond, flapper – and the fruits of course – apple, peach, bumble berry and blueberry.

“It’s amazing how many people know it and come in just because it is Pi Day,” Fedorkiw said with a smile. “There is a big following.”
