Oscars 2016 winners list: ‘Spotlight,’ ‘The Revenant,’ and ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ win top awards

The Academy Awards, normally decorous and predictable, were charged with enough politics and uncertainty to rival an election debate.

The night’s top honour, best picture, was considered one of the most hard-to-call categories. Tom McCarthy’s newsroom drama Spotlight ended up winning the best picture of the year. Mad Max: Fury Road took home multiple Oscars in a landslide of visual-effect victories, though sci-fi film Ex Machina took home the award for Best Visual Effects in a surprise win.

Leonardo DiCaprio, who appeared to be a shoo-in to land his first Academy Award in his fifth nomination, took home the Best Actor Oscar. Brie Larson, as predicted by most critics, won Best Actress for her work in The RoomThe Revenant and Birdman director Inarritu won back-to-back Oscars for directing, which is only the third time that’s happened in Academy Awards history.

Mark Rylance pulled off a shocking win in the Best Supporting Actor category for his work in Bridge of Spies, winning the award over expected favourite Sylvester Stallone for Creed. Alicia Vikander won Best Supporting Actress for The Danish Girl, as was expected.

OSCARS RED CARPET: Check out the fashion from the Oscars red carpet

After a second straight year of all-white acting nominees prompted industry-wide scrutiny, viewers and stars alike hung on the words of host Chris Rock, who definitely addressed the #OscarsSoWhite controversy.

(The winners list is below, and will be updated as the ceremony goes on. The 88th Annual Academy Awards broadcast live on Feb. 28, 2016 starting at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.)
