Surrey man stabs self, in serious condition

A Surrey man in his late 40s is in serious condition after stabbing himself in the chest.

Police received a 911 call from the man at 8:30 p.m. on Friday.

“He said he was going to put a knife through his heart and then hung up,” said Surrey RCMP Sgt. Bob Pinkewycz. The distraught man confirmed his plan when officers called him back.

Police arrived on the 15700 block of 88th Avenue to discover the man completely unconscious with a serious chest wound.

A knife was found nearby.

B.C. Ambulance Service paramedics worked extensively at the scene to save the man’s life.

Once he stabilized, they transported him to Royal Columbian Hospital, where he remains in serious condition.

Pinkewycz said this isn’t the first time police have been called to that address.

“There have been a couple of responses under the Mental Health Act,” he said.
