Saskatchewan cancer clinic workers push contract demands at premier’s dinner

REGINA – Workers at cancer clinics in Saskatchewan used the annual premier’s dinner in Regina to raise the profile of their fight for a new contract.

The Saskatchewan Cancer Agency employees set up a picket line Thursday night outside Evraz Place where Premier Brad Wall spoke to about 2,200 Saskatchewan Party supporters.

Police escorted them off the property after they were asked to leave following a 45-minute demonstration, but the workers set up a new picket on a nearby street.

The demonstrators are members of the Saskatchewan Government Employees Union and have been without a contract since December 2009.

Trent Edwards, a union spokesman, admits the demonstration was done on the spur of the moment, but says the dinner was a chance to get their message out about the need for an arbitrator.

The workers will vote next week on the agency’s final offer, but the SGEU is asking them to reject it. (CJME)
