Elderly woman killed in collision at busy Groat Road intersection

EDMONTON — An 81-year-old woman was run over and killed Thursday morning in a busy west Edmonton intersection.

A witness told Global News the woman was crossing 111 Avenue when she was hit by a pickup truck turning left off Groat Road to go east.

Police said the woman was reportedly struck in a marked crosswalk.

The witness was driving with his wife when they saw the collision around 8:30 a.m. He said he jumped out of his car and, along with an off-duty emergency worker, went to help the injured woman until EMS arrived.

She was taken away in an ambulance but died before getting to hospital.

The crash involved two vehicles and a pedestrian, police said. The witness said one vehicle turned left, crossing in front of the pedestrian, and the the truck followed, hitting her.

Police said speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash and that no charges have been laid.

The intersection and 107 Avenue northbound at Groat Road were closed for some time but have since reopened.

An investigation is ongoing.

The incident was Edmonton’s fourth traffic fatality of 2016.
