CALGARY – Staff at a southeast Calgary condo building are searching for thieves who stole furniture from the building’s lobby early Sunday morning.

An email sent to residents of the Monarch in McKenzie Towne, located in the 3000 block of McKenzie Towne Gate S.E., said the furniture was taken at around 4 a.m. on Feb. 21.

It indicated one of the thieves, a woman, opened the condo’s lobby door with a security fob.

The condo board checked the security video and were shocked to see a man and woman making off with at least $2,000 worth of their furniture.

“It did appear as if she was shopping,” condo board president Charlene Bearden said.

“She was shopping for furniture! And then she let in her friend, who helped. She pointed out a few pieces and he obliged.”

The pair chose a leather armchair, a lamp, two heavy cube-style coffee tables and a huge piece of art.

The cuplrits loaded the furniture to a truck parked outside.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Management sent out photos of the suspects to building residents.

Acting Sgt.  Matt Ball with the Calgary Police Service is investigating the case.

“When we release really high quality video, the turnaround in my experience is quite quick,” Ball said.

Police have encouraged the condo board to share the security camera footage on social media and beyond.

“The more people that see it the better,” Ball said.

Residents and police think it’s possible the suspects were trying to furnish their own home – given our tough economy.

The furniture is paid for by the residents, and will now have to be replaced.

The photos, sent to Global News by Condo Board President Charlene Bearden, show two people: a young woman with blonde hair wearing denim jeans, a black jacket, black toque and white shoes – as well as a man with dark hair, wearing jeans and a black sweater.

Anyone who recognizes the suspects is asked to call police or contact Crime Stoppers.

The Monarch was also the location of a collision last week, at which time a Calgary Transit bus hit the side of the building after colliding with a pickup truck.
