SUMMERLAND, B.C. – For the last 19 years, Summerland history has been preserved by model train enthusiasts.

While most of the original group of retirees who created the Giant’s Head model railway in the Summerland Museum have since passed away, a group of six men gather faithfully every Thursday night to keep the railway and replica town working.

Based on the Okanagan town in the 1950’s, the Kettle Valley Railway is the feature of the display, including the Trout Creek Trestle and a lakeside dock to transport fruit from rail car to ferry.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“This is kind of fun for us guys that did grow up with this stuff,” says club member Neil Trainer.

Dick Ortner is one of the founding members and continues to enjoy his hobby.

“Everybody enjoys watching it,” says Ortner. “We have a little jam session.”

All enjoy reliving their childhood through the model railway.

“My dad bought me something every year for probably 10 years,” says Ortner. “By the time I packed it in, I had quite a bit of stuff.”

“My grandfather was an engineer on the old steamer,” says new member Harry Hutchinson. “That’s always been my interest.”

The club welcomes anyone to contact them if they’re interested in joining them on Thursday nights. Dick Ortner 250-494-1982 or Ron Rosher 250-494-3171.
