CALGARY – There was a heavy police presence at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology Wednesday.
Just before noon, officers were called to the post-secondary school after police say a man threatened someone working at the school. They suspected he may have been armed.
Journalism student Zach Laing was studying in Heritage Hall when police came through.
“There were officers inside that had assault rifles in hand and there were officers that were clearly looking for somebody inside the building,” Laing said.
“I heard a couple of people have comments like, ‘wow, holy smokes – that guy’s got a gun!’”
Campus security and police initiated a search and quickly determined the suspect had already left campus.
A short time later a suspect was taken into custody at a home in the northwest community of Sandstone.
Police say he had a handgun-shaped lighter in his possession.
Charges are pending.
