1-year-old fatally shot by stray bullet while lying in crib in Compton, California

A one-year-old was fatally shot in the head while she was lying in a crib in her Compton, California home Tuesday night.

Compton Sheriff’s Station deputies responded to a call of a person suffering from a gunshot wound around 7 p.m and found the infant suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

A witness told the Los Angeles Times that she heard the sound of 10 gunshots followed by a woman screaming: “They shot my baby. They shot my baby,” from inside the home.

According KTLA 5 News, police said the gunman got out of a vehicle and walked towards the house and fired several shots and one of the stray bullets struck the child in the head.

“It looks like somebody drove up and were shooting into the house at somebody else and the baby caught a stray round,” Lt. John Corrina told the news station.

According to police, instead of waiting for paramedics to arrive at the scene, deputies rushed the child to hospital in a patrol car. The child was pronounced dead in hospital.

Police said the shooting appeared to be gang related.
