MONTREAL – A snowmobiler in his early 20s was killed Saturday when he was struck by an SUV on Route 159 in Saint-Prosper-de-Champlain near Trois-Rivères.

According to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), the collision happened at around 4:30 p.m. on Route 159 West at the junction of the TransQuebec3 snowmobiling trail.

Police said the young snowmobiler briefly stopped at the intersection before attempting to cross the highway. He was struck by an SUV travelling west and was dragged several metres, before the snowmobile burst into flames.

The victim was taken to hospital where he later  died of his injuries.

Route 159 was closed for several hours Saturday as SQ investigators tried to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the collision.
