MONTREAL — Focus Montreal introduces Montrealers to people who are shaping our community, bringing their stories into focus.

It airs on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 7:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and at midnight.

Sexual consent and assault

Since Monday the court proceedings in Jian Ghomeshi’s sexual assault trial have thrust the idea of consent into the national consciousness.

The former CBC radio host has pleaded not guilty to four counts of sexual assault, indicating last year in a post on his Facebook page, that his alleged victims were fully consensual in whatever transpired.

But two thirds of Canadians don’t fully understand what sexual consent really is.

Global Montreal’s senior anchor Jamie Orchard speaks to Jennifer Drummond with Concordia University’s Sexual Assault Resource Centre on how the criminal code defines sexual consent and assault.

West Island Palliative Care Residence

The West Island Palliative Care Residence (WIPCR) is  a unique place designed to allow terminally ill patients to die in comfort and with dignity.

The motto at the residence is compassion lives here and now with two facilities it delivers exceptional palliative care within the community.

To maintain that level of care, the WIPCR needs funding.

On Friday, Feb. 12, a who’s who of Quebec celebs are expected to turnout for the centre’s 17th annual Valentine’s Ball.

Last year, $400,000 was raised thanks to generous donations.

Teresa Dellar, founder and executive director of the West Island Palliative Care Residence and Yolande James one of the residence’s greatest ambassador’s dropped by Focus Montreal to talk about the gala event.

Sun Youth arranges free heating oil for family in need

This week a Dorval father and son turned to Global News to global news when their heat was cut off.

The family had been living without heat for a month because they couldn’t pay their bills.

That’s when Sun Youth stepped in, helping to arrange for the family to receive 450 litres of heating oil, free of charge, thanks to an emergency heating donation program.

Eric Kingsley, Sun Youth’s emergency services coordinator was in Focus Montreal studios earlier this week to discusses his organization’s “free oil for the less fortunate” program.
