A 3.7 magnitude earthquake rumbled through Charlotte County early this morning – but there are no reports of damage.
The quake was centred about 27 kilometres southeast of St. Andrews and lasted several minutes. It was detected by seismographs at shortly before 8 a.m.
Natural Resources Canada (NRC) on its earthquake site says it’s unlikely any damage would occur during an earthquake of a 5 magnitude or less.
But it’s asking people who felt the quake to report what they experienced so they can gather as much information as possible.
There are reports the quake was felt as far away as Grand Manan and Blacks Harbour.
There were three earthquakes of similar magnitude in the same general area reported by NRC last year. NRC says there are about 450 earthquakes a year in Eastern Canada, but they rarely exceed a magnitude of 4.
The entire province of New Brunswick along with part of Nova Scotia, New England and a small corner of Quebec are in what is known as the Northern Appalachian earthquake zone.
