Investigation underway into Canadian Tire fire

A Canadian Tire store in southeast Calgary remains closed as investigators work on determining the cause of a fire late Thursday.

Shoppers stocking up for the long weekend at the store near McKenzie Towne had to drop everything and run, after the fire broke out in a second floor storage room, filling the store with smoke.

One employee was rushed to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

The fire was fuelled by cans of paint and solvents. The hazardous materials unit had to be called in.

At one point, crews were ordered out of the building because of concerns the heat could buckle the roof.

They were later allowed back in and the fire was extinguished a couple of hours later.

Crews say they’re concerned about the roof’s structural integrity.

The company says it’s not clear when the store will reopen.
