Union votes in favour of strike at Cape Breton University

Teachers and maintenance workers at Cape Breton University could soon be on the picket lines.

“One hundred per cent of the ballots cast by these members were in favour of strike action, if it is necessary, to achieve a decent contract,” said Joan Jessome, president of the Nova Scotia Government Employees Union (NSGEU) in an emailed statement.

“This vote was a clear show of confidence and support to the bargaining committee that the members are willing to take whatever steps are necessary to ensure their next agreement is fair.”

The workers are members of NSGEU Local 18. The key issues at the bargaining table include concerns over workload, hours of work and pay equality.

The union says members want to be paid the same as their counterparts doing similar work at other post-secondary schools in the province.

Conciliation talks are scheduled for the beginning of February.
