SASKATOON – An early morning house fire in Saskatoon has claimed a family pet. Firefighters were called to the 1300-block of 8th Avenue North around 4:45 a.m. CT Wednesday.

They arrived to find the entire main floor of the home engulfed in flames, which was progressing up to the second floor.

Crews attacked the fire with three lines to knock down a majority of the fire before completing a search of the residence. They brought the fire under control at 6:25 a.m.

Three people in the house were able to escape along with a dog. A cat perished in the fire.

Acting battalion chief Bill Riley said working smoke detectors alerted the occupants to the blaze.

Damage is estimated at $250,000. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
