Rescuers recover dog that fell through river ice in Saskatoon

SASKATOON – An attempt was undertaken to rescue a dog that had broken through the river ice in Saskatoon Monday. At around 3:30 p.m. CT, the Saskatoon Fire Department was called to the scene near the Sutherland dog park.

Crews were guided by the dog’s owner to the area of the riverbank where the pet had last been seen, approximately six metres off shore.

The fire department’s water rescue crew entered the water via boat and searched for the pet in the South Saskatchewan River.

The dog was recovered but it did not survive.

Officials are reminding the public not to go on the thin ice and to be extremely cautious near the riverbank.
