Okanagan vet performs life saving surgery on a dog over the holidays

LAKE COUNTRY–When one of their dogs fell ill just before Christmas, the Edwards family rushed it to see a vet in Lake Country.

They were devistated to find out their pet, Kallaghan, needed emergency surgery in Vancouver.

Worse still, it was unlikely he would survive the trip, even if the family could come up with the money.

“It would have been a really hard choice to make,” says Walter Edwards.

The 9-year-old Yellow Lab’s kidney was abscessed, and needed to be removed.

Dr. Linda Kaplan with Tri Lake Animal Hospital stepped in. The surgery is pretty far out of her scope of expertise, but she offered to give it her best shot.

“We were basically having to do something right away, heroically, and what can you lose I guess,” says Kaplan.

Due to the Christmas Holidays, staffing was minimal at the animal hospital, but Kaplan says they pulled in all available
resources to try and help Kallaghan through the three-and-a-half hour surgery.
“One of the people who works here brought their dog in and it donated the blood,” explains Edwards.

Kallaghan’s family stayed with him at the animal hospital until he was finally allowed to go home on the night of Dec. 25.
His owners say he’s now their Christmas miracle.
