OTTAWA – The United States is imposing a 50 per cent tariff on a range of Canadian exports starting Saturday, after the two countries could not reach a new deal before a deadline imposed by President Donald Trump.
Trump threatened the new tariffs in July to pressure Canada to move on a number of issues that were flagged as irritants to the U.S., including provincial bans on alcohol imports, tariffs on some American made auto exports and quotas on tariff-free U.S. dairy exports.
The federal auto tariffs and the alcohol bans, which remain in effect everywhere but Alberta and Saskatchewan, were both initiated in response to Trump’s initial tariffs on Canada in 2025.
The new U.S. tariffs were to take effect on Aug. 19, but Trump delayed the implementation by three days to allow more time for talks to reach a deal.
Just before midnight Friday, both Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said those talks had broken off and a deal had not been reached.
The new tariffs will be applied to roughly five per cent of all of Canada’s exports to the United States, to a value of roughly $28 billion annually.
The tariffs are grouped by three executive orders loosely themed around motor vehicles, dairy and alcohol. But the content of each of U.S. President Donald Trump’s actual tariff lists are broader and not necessarily tied to those items.

Former financial analyst here… I’ll start by saying that the best thing about the internet is gives people a voice… it’s also the worst thing about the internet because can comment (wrongly/poorly) anytime they want.
So here we are… a bunch of retards (done being polite) cheering on Carney while he’s being a failure because they’re too weak/stupid to dig into the actual facts but instead listen to the low info, propaganda machines of Global/CBC etc.
Over 10 years of idiotic financial decisions by the Liberals and the Elbows UP retards blame another leader in another country… talk about denial.
No deal is still better than a bad deal.
51st state sounding better everyday. Want Mark Carney sold to us as the Trump whisperer? lol
Trump 2028!! Count on it!!
Look at all the mentally ill tranny lover lefty canadians in here. Bunch of softies!!
I don’t see anything I can’t live without that I haven’t already found a Canadian substitute for.
If there were any honest Canadian retailers, we’d know that any sudden price jumps were tariffed items, but sadly they will use the tariffs to push up all prices unless government steps in to stop them.
@eskimomonkey2 and Anonimous (Aug 22, 12:16pm) – Put your synthetic eyebrows on and suck on an ice cream ‘stick’ like a good MAGAt
@Dave – Scootch Moe would never slap a tariff on potash to protect his wealthy donors, no matter the cost of his personal booze consumption that he will never take off the shelves in his s#!t hole province.
Trump is not our friend!!!
Maybe when the US citizens get tired of higher prices for goods from Canada they will put someone in the president’s chair who isn’t a delusional bully.
If I thought as a Canadian, freedom of speech was a real thing I would have a lot more to say then just way to go Trump, the wounds between Canada and the US just weren’t deep enough for you already. Let’s just sever it all together. Congratulations yet again on attempting to increase cost of living in Canada and for your own country. Happy hunting.
Probably easier to list the items that are NOT gonna have tariffs, no? Wow. Some really weird items on that list. Seriously, who wrote this? Under “motor vehicle order,” the first three items listed are honey, feathers, and tortoise shell. What? Do we even produce “tortoise shell” in Canada? Weird cars made of honey, feathers, and turtle bits. And then there’s hockey equipment, but not the skates and balls? Ok… More bizarre Trumpy nonsense.
Cut off the USA on everything!
Wow such a bizarre list of items .. and no mention of forest fire smog! I would rather not counter with tariffs and just turn off supplies they need like lumber, portash, rare earth minerals, etc
Under “Motor vehicle order” they listed natural honey. And a host of other stuff. But NOTHING ABOUT MOTOR VEHICLES. So why put that in there at all?? I’ve never owned a car made out of honey yet…
Who did this article?! WHO WROTE THIS LIST? Is this an AI list? “loosely themed around motor vehicles, dairy, and alcohol.” Under dairy, you have sugars, non alcoholic beer and peppermint oil. Under alcohol, you have wood products likes tableware and FURNITURE. Under motor vehicles, there’s honey, plants, animal products… AND NOT A SINGLE MOTOR VEHICLE ITEM.
I probably used 3% from the list so I do not CARE.
Good bye Amazon an d hello toAliExpress. good bye to US cars and trucks, Hello to Chinese, and Asian and European cars. Goodbye to American vacations ,hello to Europe and Asia . And goodbye to sports teams that are American. like teams with too much american content or american captains. america/Americans can not be trusted, ever again
Carney is a useless corrupt, evil man. He only cares about himself. And what is astonishing is that so many Canadians support him and liberals. Truly astonishing
Time for us to put a 200% tariff on potash🥳
…can’t trust trump to honour any deal. His long history and the bridge deal show he is corrupt as they come. Best result IN THE LONG TERM.
All the postage stamps and baskets we make are going to get slammed. Damn
I can’t wait for the Big Beautiful Headline once dumps health catches up to him
Mark Carney has spent the last year conditioning his voter base for this exact outcome.
Things will get worse u der trump.
