Moncton teacher becomes Jedi master to teach high school math

MONCTON – The kids at Harrison Trimble High School might not have made it to the first screenings of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but that doesn’t mean they’re not getting a taste of the inter-galactic hype.

Their teacher is using Star Wars to teach his students math.

Angus Gourley says he often uses characters from the films to bring more life to his equations.

“I add things like ‘if Han Solo finds seven snow speeders and Princess Leia takes three how many are left?’ That type of thing,” he said.

Gourley says he’s been a fan since his father took him to see Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back when he was a child.

“I think the costumes, the images, the story, the characters and the concept of the force it was all really fun when I was young,” he said.

Gourley’s homeroom is filled with memorabilia from the franchise.

Everything from R2-D2 Christmas tree decorations to a life-size stormtrooper costume can be found in his class.

Alex Hayes is one of his students. He says the collection helps him connect with his teacher.

“I think it’s pretty cool because it helps us connect to him and like as a person not just a teacher so it’s pretty cool,” he said.
