REGINA – Snow plows working to clear Saskatchewan roads will soon be easier to spot thanks to the addition of a unique flashing, coloured lights.

Starting on Dec. 21, blue and amber flashing lights will be activated on snow plows, graders and snow blowers across the province.

“The blue and amber light combination is unique to snow removal equipment, so it helps motorists identify when equipment is working on the highways, said Deputy Premier and Minister responsible for SGI Don McMorris.

The lights will only be used when the equipment is plowing or blowing snow, salting, sanding or surveying highway conditions.

Manitoba, Ontario, Newfoundland and Yukon already use the blue and amber light combination. In previous years, the Saskatchewan government has only had flashing amber lights on its snow removal equipment.

“By adding the blue lights to the amber ones already in use, we’re hoping to increase visibility and awareness of our snow removal equipment,” said McMorris.

Drivers are reminded to slow down and stay back when snow plows are operating. The snow plow operators will pull over approximately every 10 kilometres or when safe, to allow motorists to pass.

It is illegal to pass snow removal equipment at more than 60 kilometres per hour when the lights are flashing.
