SASKATOON – There was an unexpected visitor in downtown Saskatoon, not far from the Delta Bessborough Hotel on Wednesday morning. Colleen Schultenkamper spotted a coyote around 10:30 a.m. CT and managed to grab a few pictures — from afar.

Wildlife officials with the City of Saskatoon confirm the animal was a coyote.

Coyote sightings have been on the rise “over the last several years,” according to Jeff Boone, pest management supervisor with the City of Saskatoon.

“And this is common for some of the other major municipalities in North America. It could be an increase in coyote population, increasing city sizes, or even more and larger green spaces in those cities,” Boone said.

Coyote sightings typically go up in the winter months, as juveniles venture out on their own, while others become more active during daylight as they look for mates.

The animals don’t normally pose a risk to humans, but Boone recommends people keep a close eye on their pets.

“If you do see a coyote, act big, bad and loud,” Boone said.
