WINNIPEG — Volunteers are playing the role of Santa this year to make sure no one is forgotten.
Groups like “Be a Santa to a Senior” are collecting donations and gifts to present to seniors living on their own or in care centres around the city.
“Some of the newer participants haven’t received a gift from anybody in years,” said Julie Donaldson, owner of Home Instead Senior Care.

“It often brings them to tears to know that they are important to the community.”

Donaldson said the response this year has been strong as the program has received over 2,000 donations around the city. It has enlisted the help of volunteers with hundreds of gifts still to be wrapped.
The Winnipeg Christmas Cheer Board will continue it’s annual tradition of giving hampers to families in need, as it has every year since 1919.
Kai Madsen asked for volunteers to deliver in their neighbourhoods, from East Kildonan to St. Vital. He said any family who is in need of a hand will not be turned away.
“If people are out there and needing a hamper, phone now. If it’s busy, keep trying.”
