In the world of high-definition cameras that show every wrinkle, blotch and blemish, heavy stage makeup and Photoshop are practices de rigueur in the media industry.
Which is perhaps why it is so refreshing when someone decides to take it all off.
Wednesday morning on Global Toronto’s The Morning Show hosts Liza Fromer, Kris Reyes, Dave Gerry and Daru Dhillon decided to remove all of their makeup live on camera.
Working in TV “can create a lot of artificial expectations about standards of beauty,” said Fromer in a blog post on Wednesday.

“The issue really hit home when my co-host Kris Reyes told me that during a weekend lunch her 3-year-old niece Ella said, ‘you don’t look like you look on your show.’ It made us all think about beauty, image and responsibility – as broadcasters and as people – so we decided to challenge ourselves,” said Fromer.
The move received a warm reception on social media, with users commending the hosts for not just taking off their makeup, but talking on-air about the perception of beauty in the media.
The no makeup conversation seems to be one that has legs.
Lady Gaga recently tweeted a photo of herself sans makeup, wishing her fans a “beautiful day.” The photo was quickly shared by hundreds of Twitter followers and talked about across international media outlets.
Of course, not every day on television will be makeup-free, but every once in a while, it can be a nice break from the smoke and mirrors.
