CALGARY – It may seem hard to believe, but Calgary is in the midst of a heat wave.
Although weather in the city hasn’t been hot, Global Calgary Meteorologist Jordan Witzel says it is generally considered a heat wave when temperatures rise 5 C above the seasonal average for three or more consecutive days.
“By definition, heat waves are a little unusual in that they define a period of consecutive days where the temperature is well above seasonal,” said Witzel.
Although the seasonal average for Calgary at this time of year is 0 C, the city has experienced temperatures at least 5 C higher for the past four days.
Witzel suggests it’s actually not uncommon for Calgarians to experience a heat wave when it isn’t the summer.
“In no way are heat waves contained to any season. If anything, it’s more likely here in southern Alberta to see such an event in the fall because of the greater influence of Chinook winds that could drive above seasonal temperatures,” added Witzel. “This particular stretch has not been driven by Chinook winds but it has been enjoyable.”
On Tuesday, Calgary recorded its fifth consecutive day of above seasonal temperatures, reaching a high of 9.2 C.
