Man released without charge as investigation into suspicious Lee Creek death continues

LEE CREEK, B.C. – A man arrested in the wake of a suspicious death in the North Shuswap has been released without charge. RCMP made the announcement in a press release Monday afternoon as they continue to investigate the death of a 47-year-old Lee Creek woman.

Her body was found by police inside a home in the 2500-block of Squilax Anglemont Rd. around 9:45 p.m. Saturday. RCMP say they were investigating “a possible shooting at a residence” when they made the sad discovery.

“It’s a little shocking,” says neighbour Donna Moffat.

The property is nearby Rodick Haig-Brown Provincial Park and neighbours say the area is usually quiet.

“This morning, after it did come out on the news, I’ve had about four or five people call and go, ‘Are you OK? Are you OK?’” says Moffat. “It’s rare to have that kind of thing happen here.”

Police say the woman knew the arrested man but they are tight-lipped about the nature of their relationship. Police are also not elaborating on why the man was arrested and then released without charge.

“The investigation into the woman’s death is still deemed as suspicious and investigators have reaffirmed again, at this time, that there is no threat to public safety or public safety issues as a result of the death at this time,” says RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dan Moskaluk.

An autopsy is expected to be conducted on the woman’s body Tuesday. Although the police presence continues, Moffat is hoping a sense of normalcy will soon return to the area.

“I think we are all just a little shocked, just wanting it to go back to where [the area] was. We are just waiting for it to come back to normal I guess,” she says.
