Water main break in East Vancouver leads to flooding, closed roads

Crews are working to repair a broken water main in East Vancouver.

Crews have been working to clean up a flood caused by a a cracked water main in East Vancouver Saturday night.

According to Lt. Pierre Moore of Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services, firefighters arrived at the scene near Knight Street and King Edward Avenue around midnight to find a large amount of water surging out of two holes in the road.

Sand trucks and salt trucks were called to the scene to prevent roads from icing over.

The flooding shut down traffic for a time, but crews later opened one lane of traffic in each direction.

City water works and engineering crews are working to repair the damage.

An exact cause for the flooding has not been determined, but Moore said the recent cold snap has reportedly caused problems with water mains throughout the city.
