EDMONTON – The City is calling an initiative to reduce litter around Edmonton a success for 2015.

There has been a 24 per cent reduction in large litter and a 12 per cent reduction in small litter, according to an audit done in June, with plastic and cigarette butts being the items that were found the most often during the 2015 Capital City Clean Up.

“This shows just what can be achieved when people come together toward a common goal of a cleaner city,” said councillor Andrew Knack.

The audit examined the same 123 sites that were audited in previous years.

The audit began in 2009. Since that year large litter has dropped by 57 per cent and small litter has decreased by 47 per cent.

“Our programs are extremely flexible. You can adopt an entire block to clean, visit a Big Bin event, take the 15-t0-clean challenge or get involved in any of the other programs and still be doing your part to make our city cleaner and better,” said Don Belanger, manager for Capital City Clean Up.

Around 1,900 people volunteered to help with the program, and 17 businesses contributed $83,620 towards clean-up.
