WINNIPEG — Grade 8 students at St. John’s-Ravencourt school were so inspired by the REDress Project, they decided to start their own.
The installation was originally created by local Metis artist Jaime Black. The lifeless dresses hung by dozens of people in the community are meant to honour missing and murdered Indigenous women.
The students wanted to take action after attending the Truth and Reconciliation Centre’s Education Days. They spoke to their teacher about hanging up red dresses in their school yard.
There are currently 32 dresses hanging on trees around the campus, with plans to hang more.
