Two children struck in hit and run at northwest Calgary intersection

CALGARY – Two children were struck in a hit and run at a northwest intersection just after 7:30 a.m. The children were hit by a vehicle at Berkley Drive and Bermondsey Way N.W.

EMS believe three children were crossing the street when a vehicle driving north on Bermondsey Way hit two of them.  An 11-year-old boy suffered soft tissue injuries; a 9-year-old girl has a broken leg. The third child walking with the group–the brother of the young girl–was not injured.

Witnesses said they tried to see where the vehicle went as they comforted the children.

“We were coming in…[to] ask them lots of questions: are you hurt? Where do you feel? All that kind of stuff,” said Ivan Enns. “The thing that’s going through my mind is: where’s this guy?”

The boy and girl children who were hit were taken to Alberta Children’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The third child was also taken to hospital, where next of kin could be properly notified, said EMS.

The intersection was not a marked crosswalk.

The unharmed child said the vehicle that didn’t stop was a white pickup truck; police described it as a Dodge Ram truck or similar type, which may have had ladders in the bed of the truck.

“We have units circulating, we’re hoping to have some tips, and we’re definitely encouraging the driver to come forward and take responsibility for this,” said Acting Sgt. Trevor Cairns with the Calgary Police Service Traffic Unit.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
