Hundreds turn out for jury selection for Nathan Johnson murder trial

HALIFAX – Hundreds of potential jurors were at Nova Scotia Supreme Court Monday as jury selection got underway for the high profile murder case of Nathan Tremaine Johnson.

Johnson is charged with first degree murder in the slaying of Donald Chad Smith.

The 27-year-old was gunned down in October of 2010 while he tried to deliver a pizza to a Highfield Park apartment.  Police believe Smith was called to the building following an earlier dispute and then murdered.

The case remained unsolved for 3 years. In 2013, police finally laid charges against Johnson.

Johnson’s trial is expected to last for at least 16 days.

A second man, Randy Riley, is also facing a charge of first degree murder.  A judge approved a severance application, meaning each man will get their own trial.

It’s expected the crown will begin presenting their evidence against Johnson tomorrow morning.

Since there are two separate trials for the co-accused, a publication ban has been imposed, so evidence presented inside the courtroom cannot be reported.
