SASKATOON – If all goes according to plan, construction of the new Traffic Bridge could start within “weeks.” Graham Commuter Partners (GCP), who is also designing the North Commuter Parkway Bridge, has applied for the necessary regulatory permits to begin construction of the downtown Saskatoon bridge.

If approved, GCP will set up a staging area in Rotary Park and build an earthen berm from the south bank of the river to an existing pier in the centre of the South Saskatchewan River.

“The staging area will act as the site for construction vehicles and operations, and the berm will allow construction access within the river for the new bridge,” said Dan Willems, who is a special projects manager with the city.

Demolition of the second span of the old bridge from the Rotary Park would then start and the centre pier would be improved to handle the new bridge structure.

“Following this stage of work, which is expected to be complete by April 2016, GCP plans to draw back the earthen berm southward and continue work around the span nearest the Rotary Park riverbank in the 2016 spring and summer season,” said Willems.

GCP is also preparing the necessary permits for the North Commuter Parkway Bridge project which are expected to be submitted in early 2016.

Both bridges are expected to be operational by October 2018.
