Edmonton Oilers release details about Glen Sather ceremony

EDMONTON — Glen Sather will join the likes Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and Paul Coffey when he is honoured by the Edmonton Oilers.

Sather will be honoured on Friday, December 11 in a banner raising ceremony at Rexall Place before the Oilers home game against the New York Rangers.

The former Oilers head coach and general manager will become the ninth Oiler to have a banner raised by the team, joining Gretzky, Messier, Coffey, Al Hamilton, Jari Kurri, Grant Fuhr, Glenn Anderson and Rod Phillips.

“We are excited to roll out the details for Glen Sather’s banner raising celebration. We are delighted to host Glen and his family in Edmonton for what will be a very special time for him, our organization and the city,” said Oilers Entertainment Group CEO Bob Nicholson.

As a part of the celebration, the City of Edmonton will honour Glen Sather at a public event on Thursday, December 10 at the Winspear Centre.

There will also be a special Gala Dinner at the Shaw Conference Centre with proceeds going to the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation.

Sather was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997. He won four Stanley Cups as the Oilers head coach (1984-88) and a fifth in 1990 as the team’s president and general manager.

He’s currently the president of the Rangers.

Sather played 10 NHL seasons with the Boston Bruins, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, Montreal Canadiens and Minnesota North Stars, accumulating 192 points (80 goals, 112 assists). He also appeared in 72 playoff games.

Sather played one season with the Oilers in 1976-77 when the team was part of the World Hockey Association.
