Driver thrown from car lands on overhead LA freeway sign

LOS ANGELES — A driver whose car rolled over several times on a Los Angeles freeway was thrown so far that his body landed on a road sign at least 20 feet above the ground.

California Highway Patrol Officer Chad Guin says the crash occurred on Interstate 5 north of downtown at 7 a.m. The freeway was reopened after firefighters removed the body with a firetruck ladder. Guin said the victim was identified but his name won’t be released until relatives are notified.

Officers had earlier climbed a wooden ladder and covered the body with a sheet. The victim was described as a 20-year-old man.

The car came to rest under the sign. Another car was hit by debris but Guin said he didn’t know if it was involved.
