CALGARY – Environment Canada issued a freezing rain warning for a parts of central and eastern Alberta on Thursday.
Freezing rain warnings are issued when rain falling in sub-zero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces on walkways, parking lots, roads and highways.
As such, Environment Canada warned Albertans may need to adjust their driving habits.
“Radar shows an area of freezing rain extending from near Buffalo Narrows, Saskatchewan to east of Edmonton, and southward towards Stettler,” read a statement on the Environment Canada website, which said the freezing rain which fell south of Edmonton had become quite patchy.
Areas impacted by the warning include:
- Bonnyville – St. Paul – Cold Lake – Lac La Biche
- Drumheller – Three Hills
- Fort Saskatchewan – Vegreville – Redwater – Smoky Lake
- Leduc – Camrose – Wetaskiwin – Tofield
- Red Deer – Ponoka – Innisfail – Stettler
- Westlock – Barrhead – Athabasca
The freezing rain warning initially was in place for communities on the west side of the QEII. It was later dropped for Airdrie, Cochrane, Olds, Sundre, Drayton Valley, Devon, Rimbey and Pigeon Lake.
It was originally issued at around 5:45 a.m.
