Seamus O’Regan wins Liberal seat in Avalon riding, beating out NDP incumbent Ryan Cleary

A tight race to the end, but Seamus O’Regan has snatched the seat from NDP incumbent Ryan Cleary.

St. John’s South-Mount Pearl was the riding to watch in Newfoundland and Labrador, as two well-known candidates Cleary and O’Regan are fought a close battle for the seat.

O’Regan is a well-known former journalist, and was gaining ground in the late days of the election.

NDP candidate Ryan Cleary was hoping to hold his seat in the riding for a second consecutive term.

Cleary’s win over Liberal incumbent Siobhan Coady in 2011 was his second attempt to secure the seat, after having been beaten by Coady in 2008 after Danny Williams’ “Anything But Conservative” campaign in the province.

Boundary changes this past year mean this riding now includes the communities of Witless Bay and Bay Bulls.
