Hamilton cop charged with assault after 35-year-old man injured in jail

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – A Hamilton police officer is facing a criminal charge after a probe by the province’s Special Investigations Unit.

Const. Kudo Park is charged with assault causing bodily harm after a 35-year-old man sustained injuries while in police custody in April of this year.

The SIU says Thomas Schonberger complained of pain after spending a night in a local jail cell and had to be taken to hospital for treatment.

Park is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 24.

The unit would not release further details of its investigation.

The SIU is an arms-length agency tasked with probing reports of death or injury during interactions with police.
