CALGARY – Police took one man into custody on Thursday following a standoff in the southeast community of Cranston.
The incident started near the intersection of Cranfield Park and Cranfield Green S.E. at around 11 a.m. when officers attempted to take someone into custody. Instead of complying, investigators said the man moved inside an area home.
Police asked residents to avoid the area while the standoff was in progress, and to refrain from posting pictures of responding officers and police vehicles to social media.
The standoff lasted for nine hours.
Police eventually used a battering ram and stun grenades to get inside the house.
Neighbours told Global News it was a frightening few hours.
“You could hear him through the walls just screaming,” said Mike Wallace. “He was screaming all the way from upstairs to downstairs, and as he got taken into custody.”
“At first it was kind of interesting and then it got terrifying real fast.”
Police didn’t provide many details at the conclusion of the standoff, only saying the man was taken into custody as “part of an ongoing investigation.”
