Shafia family appeal their murder conviction

MONTREAL – A Montreal family convicted of the murder of four relatives are seeking a new trial.

Mohammad Shafia, his wife Tooba Yahya and their son Hamed Shafia have filed an appeal of their first-degree murder convictions.

They were convicted in January 2012 for the murder of the three Shafia sisters and Mohammad Shafia’s first wife in 2009.

It was a case that brought the issue of honour killings to the forefront.

They argue the trial judge was wrong to admit evidence from an expert on honour killings.

The trio continue to deny they killed anyone.

The bodies of the three teenage sisters and Shafia’s first wife were found in a car at the bottom of a canal in Kingston, Ontario.
