Manitoba Moose salvage single point in shootout loss to Marlies

The Toronto Marlies handed the Manitoba Moose their second loss in as many games, but this time the Moose didn’t go away empty handed.  The Moose gained a single point as they suffered a 3-2 shootout loss to the Marlies on Saturday afternoon at the Ricoh Coliseum.

The Moose were less than two minutes away from back to back regulation losses when Ryan Olsen scored the equalizer for the Moose with just 1:51 remaining in the third period.  Matt Halischuk and Chase De Leo had the assists on the tieing goal.

Moose goaltender Eric Comrie made his first start of the season and kept it close despite the Moose getting badly outshot 41-29.  Comrie allowed two goals while stopping 39 shots in the loss.  He also stopped the first three Marlies shooters in the shootout, before Byron Froese scored to give Toronto the win.

J.C. Lipon scored the other goal for Manitoba.  His first goal of the season was assisted by John Albert and Jan Kostalek.  The Moose failed to find the goal in all four powerplay opportunities.

Froese and Andrew Campbell had the goals for the Marlies while Garret Sparks stopped 27 of 29 shots in the victory. Sparks also stopped all four of the Moose players in the shootout with De Leo, Albert, Matt Fraser and Joel Armia all failing to find the mark.

The Moose will now return to Winnipeg for Thursday’s home opener against the Ontario Reign at MTS Centre.  The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 o’clock.
