Alberta man charged in fatal Forest Lawn shooting

CALGARY – A 25-year-old man has been charged in the shooting death of a Calgary man found last week in the city’s Forest Lawn community.

Police said Wednesday Jerry Cody Goodeagle, of Gleichen, Alta., has been charged with second-degree murder.

Jonathan Joe Schmeikal, 34, of Calgary, was found unresponsive on the 2600 block of 43 Street S.E. just before 6 a.m. last Wednesday.

Police said he died as a result of a shooting they believe happened near where Schmeikal was found.

“They were known to each other prior to the shooting,” said Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus at an afternoon press conference. “The victim was being driven around in a stolen vehicle by more than one individual. He was shot in the vicinity, and then left at that location.”

Goodeagle is set to appear in court Oct. 15.
