Calgary police name 34-year-old Forest Lawn murder victim

CALGARY – Calgary police identified the victim in a suspicious death Wednesday in the community of Forest Lawn, as they declared the case a homicide Friday.

Jonathan Joe Schmeikal, 34, of Calgary, was found unresponsive on the 2600 block of 43 Street S.E. just before 6 a.m. on Wednesday. Police are not releasing the cause of death.

“Although residents in the area reported to media that they had heard shots fired earlier in the morning, no reports to police were made prior to the body being discovered,” said police in a release Friday. “There is nothing to indicate this was a random incident, however, a specific motive is yet to be determined.”

Police don’t have anyone in custody, and are working on suspect descriptions.

Police are asking anyone who was in the area early Wednesday morning to call the non-emergency line at 403-266-1234 or the Homicide Unit Tip Line at 403-428-8877. Tips can also be made anonymously by contacting Crime Stoppers.
